Convincing your Emotional side that Failure is Good

Wednesday, 15 June 2011   |   Creative Thinking

FailureRecently I've been reading about motivation and change.  It's interesting how our minds work in seemingly illogical ways but when we dig a bit deeper we see that it makes perfect sense.  Let's explore our fear of failure.  We all know logically that failure is a natural result of exploring and experimenting and learning and that it leads to eventual success.  Emotionally we fight and resist this however and want to stay in our comfort zone.

We have to convince our emotional side to let go and this requires a different approach.

The Definition of Creativity

Wednesday, 01 June 2011   |   Creative Thinking

Yin YangThere are many ways to define creative thinking.  Here is a way I like to look at it.

If I were to reduce creative thinking to it's underlying principle,  I would say it is relationships and that there are two sides to this.  Identifying relationships and creating relationships.

Creativity can be one or the other,  and often,  a mixture of the two.

The Creative Thinking Habit

Wednesday, 25 May 2011   |   Creative Thinking

Lightbulb momentMake creative thinking a habit.

If you already think creatively habitually,  great.  If you don't.  Start doing it now.

1. There is everything to gain and nothing to lose.

2. It's easy to see other people being creative and think "They must be very talented,  I could not do that."  It's easy to become lazy and just do what you've always done.  Beware of this trap.

3. If this is you,  make a pact with yourself to break out of it now.

The Usability Factor and the Effort Equation

Wednesday, 18 May 2011   |   Creative Thinking

ScalesYou're in the middle of your latest project,  your latest creative endeavor.  It's going to be awesome.  The idea is great.  Everyone who uses it is going to think it's great.  Or are they?  It's easy to get carried away and lose track of the bigger picture.

Your creation will be used according to the following equation:

Usability Factor = Benefit + Excitement - Effort

Spark your Creative Thinking with Lists

Wednesday, 11 May 2011   |   Creative Thinking

todo listDo you ever find yourself overwhelmed with the amount of work you have to do.  You have a pile of tasks at the beginning of the day,  and more come in as the day goes on.  This adds stress and that is not good for your creative thinking.  It is also common for us to overestimate how much work we have,  adding more stress.  A basic todo list may just be the fancy dancy, all singing, all dancing cure for all that ails ya.

Keep a creativity Journal

Wednesday, 04 May 2011   |   Creative Thinking

JournalKeeping a journal has many benefits.  Particularly with respect to creativity.  Take a minute to think about how you think.  Think about the last time you had a really awesome idea.  Was it visual? Or some kind of fluffy presence?  It's probably something that's quite hard for you to define.  Have you ever had what you thought was a brilliant idea,  only to start explaining it to someone and find that it wouldn't really work?  I'm willing to bet you have.

Creativity and the Bag Principle

Wednesday, 20 April 2011   |   Creative Thinking

Bag PrincipleYou have to pack a bag with many different items.  You start packing by placing things in neatly in an organised manner.  You're almost finished but the last few items just don't fit.  They almost do but not quite.  You can take everything out and start again.  You could try and readjust a few items and see if that helps.  Or you could try picking the bag up and shaking it.  Things will move around slightly and everything will fall into place.  This is the bag principle and when being creative you need to develop your bag packing strategy to get everything to fall into place.

Energise Your Creativity - Make it exciting

Wednesday, 13 April 2011   |   Creative Thinking

ExcitingIf you want to be really creative with respect to whatever task you are doing there are many ingredients that are necessary.  One key ingredient however is excitement.  You need to have an enthusiasm and passion for what you are doing if you want your mind to produce brilliance.  When you are excited you are in a positive mindset and this leads your mind to be in an open and flexible state that is ripe for creativity.  You also encourage your subconscious to get onboard,  providing a skillful ally.  Even if you are not excited by the task at hand,  don't worry,  there are things you can do to get around that.

How to Boost Your Unconscious Creativity

Wednesday, 06 April 2011   |   Creative Thinking

UnicycleCreative thinking is often very fun yet is actually a very complex thing.  Recently I've been learning to unicycle and it got me thinking about how much our unconscious mind plays in a lot of things we do, in particular creative thinking.  This part of our mind is something that we tend to pay little attention to (Which is hardly surprising given it is unconscious after all) yet plays a rather important role.  How often have you struggled to come up with a solution to a problem and then later on when you weren't thinking about it,  a brilliant idea pops into your head?

Wednesday, 30 March 2011   |   Creative Thinking

SunglassesSunglasses are awesome things.  The can dim the brightness,  remove the glare,  and can even make things such as a tennis ball stand out.  They make the important things clearer to us by removing the unnecessary.  If you want to be more creative you need to come up with strategies to do the same with everything around you.  You need to develop your creative shades.

Is Destruction always Devastating?

Tuesday, 15 March 2011   |   Creative Thinking

Japan FlagThere is no denying that destruction is generally a bad thing.  The loss that Japan has faced is huge.  What we have to realise however (and I don't mean to downplay the horribleness of this event), is that often there are two sides to these events and there is also a large opportunity here in terms of starting again.  The creative potential that is opened up in the aftermath of the Japan earthquake is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the Japanese people.
