Powerful brainstorming in invaluable. If you and your team can come up with better ideas then you put yourself in a much stronger position. Realising dramatic improvements in your brainstorming sessions is also not very hard. What we are aiming for here is getting away from just saying "Hey, let's come up with some ideas." and heading towards creating an environment ripe for awesome ideas to blossom.
Encouraging others to be more creative is a valuable goal. The following suggestions are deliberately chosen to be easy to implement and should meet with little resistance. The aim is to guide creativity into the picture with as little fuss as possible. People can't be told to be more creative, but create an environment in which they want to be more creative and you will achieve wonders.
Here is another way we can look at creativity. Highly creative people mix diversity and balance in just the right ways. Remember, something that is creative is not just something that is different, it is something that is also useful. If you want to improve your creativity you also have to make sure that what you create is also very useful.
A lot of creativity is in finding the opportunities. They give you the hints on where you can direct your talent to have the most impact. They give you ideas that you otherwise may not have had. Finding them is something of an art. It involves knowing where to look and keeping a keen eye.
The Apple iPhone, the Toyota Prius, the Bang and Olufsen Beolab 3. These are but a few examples of creative and extremely successful products. There are many reasons that they worked and I don't think we can say that any particular point is the main reason but we can identify some contributing traits. Boldness and Audacity.
If you want to be more creative then you need to take on these traits as well.
Recently I've been reading about motivation and change. It's interesting how our minds work in seemingly illogical ways but when we dig a bit deeper we see that it makes perfect sense. Let's explore our fear of failure. We all know logically that failure is a natural result of exploring and experimenting and learning and that it leads to eventual success. Emotionally we fight and resist this however and want to stay in our comfort zone.
We have to convince our emotional side to let go and this requires a different approach.

There are many ways to define creative thinking. Here is a way I like to look at it.
If I were to reduce creative thinking to it's underlying principle, I would say it is relationships and that there are two sides to this. Identifying relationships and creating relationships.
Creativity can be one or the other, and often, a mixture of the two.
Make creative thinking a habit.
If you already think creatively habitually, great. If you don't. Start doing it now.
1. There is everything to gain and nothing to lose.
2. It's easy to see other people being creative and think "They must be very talented, I could not do that." It's easy to become lazy and just do what you've always done. Beware of this trap.
3. If this is you, make a pact with yourself to break out of it now.
You're in the middle of your latest project, your latest creative endeavor. It's going to be awesome. The idea is great. Everyone who uses it is going to think it's great. Or are they? It's easy to get carried away and lose track of the bigger picture.
Your creation will be used according to the following equation:
Usability Factor = Benefit + Excitement - Effort
Do you ever find yourself overwhelmed with the amount of work you have to do. You have a pile of tasks at the beginning of the day, and more come in as the day goes on. This adds stress and that is not good for your creative thinking. It is also common for us to overestimate how much work we have, adding more stress. A basic todo list may just be the fancy dancy, all singing, all dancing cure for all that ails ya.
Keeping a journal has many benefits. Particularly with respect to creativity. Take a minute to think about how you think. Think about the last time you had a really awesome idea. Was it visual? Or some kind of fluffy presence? It's probably something that's quite hard for you to define. Have you ever had what you thought was a brilliant idea, only to start explaining it to someone and find that it wouldn't really work? I'm willing to bet you have.
Here is our list of the 10 most creative and influential people of the world. We have tried to keep it varied and include people from a variety of different areas. We can learn a lot from studying people that are at the top of their game in terms of creativity. Remember, this list is just our opinion, and creativity is such a subjective beast. We're sure you'll disagree with us and encourage you to leave a comment with who you think should be on the list. Later on we'll do a readers top 10 list.
You have to pack a bag with many different items. You start packing by placing things in neatly in an organised manner. You're almost finished but the last few items just don't fit. They almost do but not quite. You can take everything out and start again. You could try and readjust a few items and see if that helps. Or you could try picking the bag up and shaking it. Things will move around slightly and everything will fall into place. This is the bag principle and when being creative you need to develop your bag packing strategy to get everything to fall into place.
If you want to be really creative with respect to whatever task you are doing there are many ingredients that are necessary. One key ingredient however is excitement. You need to have an enthusiasm and passion for what you are doing if you want your mind to produce brilliance. When you are excited you are in a positive mindset and this leads your mind to be in an open and flexible state that is ripe for creativity. You also encourage your subconscious to get onboard, providing a skillful ally. Even if you are not excited by the task at hand, don't worry, there are things you can do to get around that.
Creative thinking is often very fun yet is actually a very complex thing. Recently I've been learning to unicycle and it got me thinking about how much our unconscious mind plays in a lot of things we do, in particular creative thinking. This part of our mind is something that we tend to pay little attention to (Which is hardly surprising given it is unconscious after all) yet plays a rather important role. How often have you struggled to come up with a solution to a problem and then later on when you weren't thinking about it, a brilliant idea pops into your head?
Sunglasses are awesome things. The can dim the brightness, remove the glare, and can even make things such as a tennis ball stand out. They make the important things clearer to us by removing the unnecessary. If you want to be more creative you need to come up with strategies to do the same with everything around you. You need to develop your creative shades.
This week I thought I would put together a list of 10 websites that you can frequent to boost your creative thinking. It is not your typical list of creative websites. Think of this list, not as a set of resources to learn more about creativity, but as a recipe for boosting your creativity. These websites will build and bolster your creativity from a range of different angles and will fuel your creative ability with a slew of different ideas, perspectives and skills.
There is no denying that destruction is generally a bad thing. The loss that Japan has faced is huge. What we have to realise however (and I don't mean to downplay the horribleness of this event), is that often there are two sides to these events and there is also a large opportunity here in terms of starting again. The creative potential that is opened up in the aftermath of the Japan earthquake is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the Japanese people.
