A Week of Metaphor

Friday, 04 February 2011   |   Creativity Challenges

Almost equal toSometimes it can help to really understand and appreciate a topic,  problem or activity if you try and think of metaphors.  Once you have a metaphor you can often discover new insights that stem from it.  It can also help you to find the underlying principle,  which can be powerful in many ways,  in particular streamlining and simplifying.

Your challenge this week is to pick an activity,  problem or topic each day,  relevant to what you are doing and find a metaphor for it.  Once you have done that,  identify three ways in which the metaphor applies.

For instance I may pick creativity as my topic.  I may then decide that a good metaphor is a bouncy ball.  The three ways it relates to creativity are such:

  • Creativity is like a bouncy ball.  As long as you keep hitting it it'll bounce all over the place but as soon as you leave it it will soon come to a stop.
  • Creativity is like a bouncy ball.  You find great interest in it as a kid but as you grow up you tend to forget about it.
  • Creativity is like a bouncy ball.  Costs virtually nothing yet can entertain for hours.

Metaphors really help you to see things from different angles and it's often those different angles that can unleash awesome opportunities and discoveries.
