Lunar Loonies

Friday, 22 July 2011   |   Creativity Challenges

Full MoonA recent study has revealed that you are more likely to be attacked by an African lion shortly after a full moon (if you happen to be in Africa that is).  The reason actually makes sense.  The increased light of the full moon means they find it harder to hunt and are hungrier shortly after.  People have long believed that the full moon brings out the loonies in people.  Many studies have proven this to be a fallacy however and it is not true.

This is an example of the confirmation bias (see more on biases here).  Essentially we see weird behavior all the time but when there is a full moon we think there is more weird behavior.  Because it is on our mind we notice the loonies more and fall into the false conclusion that there is more weird behavior and it must be a result of the full moon.  There is not actually more weird behavior,  it is just that you notice it more.

Your challenge this week is to come up with the most creative theory you can as to why the full moon may be inducing this behavior in people.

They obviously don't have to be true.  Be creative, be humorous and have fun.

And if you come up with any good ones then leave a comment and share it with us.

Remember to check back next Friday when our next Creativity Challenge will be released.
