No Talking

No TalkingThink about how much time you spend talking each day.  It's probably quite a bit.  Research suggests however that a little over 90% of our communication effectiveness is a result of non-verbal cues.  Your words themselves account for less than 10% of getting your message across.  When it comes to creativity, how you present and communicate your ideas is just as important as the ideas themselves.  We tend to forget that a lot of the time.

So this week we are going to have a little challenge that will allow us to become more aware of our non verbal cues and also to have a little fun with it.

Your challenge this week is to go a period of time every day without talking.  You'll have to be creative in how you communicate.

How you organise this is up to you.  You could arrange it so that nobody is allowed to talk.  You could make it so that they can talk and it is only you that cannot.  You may inform others of your challenge or you could make it part of the challenge for you to communicate this fact to them.  I would also ban the use of writing as an alternative.  That would be cheating really wouldn't it.

Think about all the different ways you can get your message across.

  • facial expressions
  • hand gestures
  • arranging items to form symbols
  • etc

The first few days you will find this challenge to be a bit tough.  Persist and you will probably surprise yourself with the ideas you come up with towards the end of the week.  Take some time after each session to reflect on how you went and what you might change next time as well.  Consider what worked and what didn't.  Look out for any interesting side effects like for instance does a non-verbal language start to evolve?

Be creative and have fun.

Remember to check back next Friday when our next Creativity Challenge will be released.
