Spoonerisms

Monday, 01 August 2011   |   Creativity Games

SpoonerismThis week we're mangling words.

Game:  There are 5 random words listed below.  Your aim is to use one of them to create a spoonerism.

  • evening
  • pie
  • froth
  • spike
  • verb

Challenge:  For extra challenge, try and use two words from above in your spoonerism.

Strategy: A spoonerism is a play on words where corresponding consonants or vowels are switched, resulting in a new set of words with a different meaning.  Often it occurs as a slip of the tongue and is unintentional but other times it is deliberate.  Here is an example:

Original sentence:

A well oiled bicycle.

Spoonerism:

A well boiled icicle.

Trying to come up with your own can be tough but also a lot of fun.  You have to think about the meanings of words and the sounds and get the two to line up just right.
