Creative Mnemonics

MemoryThis week we're defining.

Game:  There are 2 random words below.  Use them both in a mnemonic for something.  It could be anything you like but there are a few examples below if you can't think of anything.  If you pick something that these words don't fit the letters for then you can change them for a word that is similar.

  • spaghetti
  • teacher

Challenge:  For extra challenge make your mnemonic related to the item you are creating it for.

Strategy: Mnemonics are a great way to help remember patterns or lists of things.  The idea is that you create a sentence where the first letters of the words match the letters of the list you are trying to remember.  The sillier or funnier the sentence the more memorable it will be.  This is a creative technique that is really useful and which can be a lot of fun.   Be creative.  You mnemonic may not be based on the first letters of the words.  You could for instance encode a number where each word has the number of letters as the digits you are encoding.

Some ideas for things you can create mnemonics for:

  • Colours of the rainbow
  • A checklist for a particular sport
  • The order of the planets
  • Sequences in a card game
  • A telephone number
  • The periodic table of elements
  • How to tie a particular knot
  • etc
